Read Full Project Description

Pinderfield Hospital is a brand new, state-of-the-art healthcare facility in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. Procured under a 330 million PFI scheme for the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, The hospital is split over two blocks, five floors on each block covering 88,000m.

The main contractor, Balfour Beatty and joint venture partner Haden Young started construction work on the site in late 2007 with completion due in March 2010. The project by Balfour Beatty is the quickest build hospital programme to date. Haden Building Management is also responsible for overseeing facilities management and staff transition. OCL has been on site since February 2008 and are due to complete works by December 2010.

OCL has been working along side Knauf drywall to design a number of bespoke walls and construction details for this project, many of which are now being used on other projects. There are approximately 40 different types of wall being installed at Pinderfields to fulfil the requirements of acoustics, fire ratings and radiology.

Of particular interest is the hybrid shaft walls used in corridor areas. The innovative design enables the installation of primary modules and services prior to the partition commencing. The bespoke detail allows out of sequence construction whilst maintaining the integrity of the wall structure. This also eliminates working around services and resolves access issues.

As well as installing standard and bespoke drywall partitions OCL is installing Komfort clean-room demountable partitions, the first of which have been installed within the last few weeks. The Komfort walls are a combination of complete demountable walls and bespoke drylining walls with a Komfort lining to the face of the partition. These walls are required for the operating theatres as the face of the lining is vinyl coated steel which provides excellent hygienic properties required to meet the NHS HTMs. In addition OCL are installing the SAS System 120 anti-bacterial suspended ceiling to the theatre suites.

Since being on site OCL has also been awarded other work packages. Window boards, mastic, Komfort, fire protection, suspended ceilings and render to pool area.
