Since launching our ‘Girls can Build’ programme 16 months ago, 2,000 boys and girls have now taken part in the programme and this summer, we stepped things up again!
The programme was re-worked to cater for a teenage audience and we proudly hit the ground running with our secondary school programme aimed at boys and girls in years 8 and 9. Starting out in our local community, we spoke to hundreds of teenagers at four schools about the rewarding careers in construction and the reality of a national skills shortage coupled with an aging workforce.
The programme took place in the format of assemblies where we used interactive discussions and live polls to help demonstrate the variety of roles in the sector and the salaries expected to earn. Girls can Build is an initiative that we offer to our clients and working with The London Borough of Islington – we were able to deliver to over 100 year 9 girls at Highbury Fields School in Islington.
We also delivered a special tailored session to sixth form girls at an Essex SEND school, who helped us reach another milestone of serving students with additional learning needs, including severe autism and downs syndrome.
Now – we look at expanding our provision to more girls and boys, it’s an exciting time to be part of OCL and pushing boundaries and helping the industry inspire more youngsters into construction. If you want to get involved, email our social value lead – varsha.patel@ocl.london
